Alyce Johnson is an Account Executive at Consolidated Insurance Brokers in New Farm, and has worked in commercial insurance since 2007.
Most of that career has been spent around the building and construction industry. She spent close to eight years in an insurance role at Master Builders Queensland, serving builders and construction businesses, from 2008 to 2016, and joined Consolidated Insurance Brokers in 2019.

Close to Eight Years Working With Builders
Alyce came into insurance in 2007 and into construction work the year after, spending close to eight years in an insurance role at Master Builders Queensland, dedicated to the building and construction industry.
That is a long time in one sector, and it is why construction runs through her work here. Builders, trades and construction businesses were the clients she dealt with day to day, so a conversation with her tends to start with how the business actually operates rather than with the name of a product.
It also shapes what she asks for. The detail that matters in construction insurance is usually not the policy wording first. It is the work the business does, who physically does it, and what has changed since the last renewal.
Why the Work a Builder Does Decides the Cover
The word builder covers a great many different businesses, and the point Alyce makes to construction clients is that the label on its own tells an insurer very little.
Two businesses can both call themselves builders and be doing quite different work: new residential builds against commercial fitouts, work at height against work at ground level, a crew of employees against a model that runs largely on subcontractors. Depending on the policy and the insurer, those differences can affect how the risk is assessed, what the policy excludes and what a claim turns on.
So her questions are about the work itself, in detail. What the business builds, who does it, what the largest job looks like, and what has been taken on this year that was not there last year.
When a Construction Business Grows, the Cover Has to Keep Up
The change Alyce sees most often is growth that nobody thought to mention.
Turnover rises, staff numbers move, more work goes out to subcontractors, projects get bigger, new plant and equipment arrives, or the business takes on a type of job it has never done before. Any of those can matter to an insurer, and the moment to raise them is when they happen, or at renewal, rather than after something goes wrong.
That is the part clients tend to hear only once. A policy built around the business as it was three years ago is not necessarily the policy the business needs now, and the difference has a habit of surfacing at the worst possible time.
