Cyndie entered the insurance industry in 2007, joining as an assistant at the business that later became Consolidated Insurance Brokers and progressing into a general insurance consultant role. Commercial property is a particular area of strength for Cyndie. Two buildings that look alike can carry very different insurance risk, depending on who occupies them and what actually happens on the premises.
A tenant's occupation can change the level of risk attached to a property, and it can influence the premium. Cyndie works to understand those details rather than treating a commercial building as an address and a sum insured.
She also puts weight on whether the building sum insured still reflects what it would cost to rebuild today. For a property owner, getting that number wrong can have serious consequences after a major loss.
A Lesson That Shaped Cyndie's Approach
One experience from earlier in her career has stayed with Cyndie. During a home insurance renewal she ran a building calculator, which indicated the customer's sum insured should be increased. About a month later, that home was destroyed by fire.
Because the sum insured had been reviewed and increased before the loss, the customer was in a much better financial position than they would otherwise have been.
That is why Cyndie still treats a sum insured as something to be actively checked against current rebuild costs, rather than a number carried forward from one renewal to the next.
