Deja Coffey is a Senior Broker Assistant at Consolidated Insurance Brokers in Bundaberg, working across farm and home insurance.
She came into insurance in 2018 and has built experience across client service, retention, operations, account management and broking support.
Her path in was not planned. She finished school without a clear direction, followed a friend into the industry, and found the people side of it suited her. Building relationships, solving problems and making things easier for clients turned out to be the part she liked most.
Farm insurance is where her working experience and her background meet. Deja describes herself as a farm kid at heart, and she is particularly motivated by helping rural clients protect the homes, farms and livelihoods they have built.
Farm Insurance and Country Livelihoods
Deja calls herself a country girl who wants to protect country livelihoods, and for her farm insurance is not just another product line.
Having grown up around farming, she understands that a rural property is often a home, a business and a livelihood at once, and that the insurance has to hold all three. That perspective is why she pushes to make sure a rural client actually understands their cover rather than simply holding it.
She particularly enjoys the difficult ones: the unusual risk, or the client who is frustrated with what they have and needs someone to work the problem through with them.
Where Home Insurance Catches People Out
Home insurance is where Deja developed much of her knowledge, and years of it have shown her how easily two kinds of cover get treated as the same thing.
The confusion she meets most often is between compulsory third party insurance and third party property damage cover on a motor policy. They sound similar and they do very different jobs.
She also finds people assuming a feature is automatically included when the policy may say otherwise, particularly accidental damage and motor burnout, and assuming a home sum insured set years ago still reflects what rebuilding costs today.
Her approach is to explain those differences before a client has to rely on the policy, not after.
