Reena Karayil is an Account Executive at Consolidated Insurance Brokers in New Farm, working across home and contents, landlord and private motor insurance.
She joined the business in 2015, after moving to Australia from New Zealand, and started in an administration and finance role rather than in broking.
From there she learned the domestic side of the business from the ground up: policy processing, quotations, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, and the payment and funding arrangements that sit behind them. She has since trained other Consolidated Insurance Brokers team members in domestic policy processing, and moved into her current Account Executive role.
That route in is what shapes how she works. Much of what decides whether a policy responds properly is administrative detail, and Reena has spent years on the side of the business where that detail is either right or wrong.
Not Every Home or Motor Policy Does the Same Job
The assumption Reena meets most often is that home, contents, landlord and motor policies are broadly interchangeable, and that the only real difference between two of them is the price.
In practice the benefits, the limits and the exclusions vary between insurers, and so does what happens when a client actually needs to use the policy. She spends the time on those differences so a client knows what they are buying, rather than finding out at claim time.
A Renewal Is Not a Formality
Renewals, endorsements and cancellations look like paperwork from the outside. Reena treats them as the points where the insurance either keeps up with the client or quietly stops matching them.
A renovation, a change of tenant, a new car, a move: each one changes the risk, and none of them updates a policy on its own. Her habit is to check that what the policy says is still the client's actual situation before the renewal goes through, not after.
Paying an Insurance Premium Monthly
A distinctive part of Reena's role is insurance funding, the arrangement that lets a client pay an annual premium in monthly instalments instead of in one payment.
She handles funding enquiries and quotes for clients across the business, sets up the monthly arrangements, and liaises with funders about the instalment options available.
Premium funding is a credit arrangement that sits beside the insurance. It has its own contract, its own cost, and consequences for the policy if the instalments stop, so her job is to make sure a client understands what they are entering into rather than to talk them into it.
